ATLANTA, GA. — The Ted Scripps Leadership Institute, a program partnered with the Society of Professional Journalists, will be in Atlanta, Ga., on May 30 – June 1, 2019, at the Hilton Atlanta. Scripps Institute is a program that helps participants become better leaders by offering a mix of sessions focused on interpersonal and organizational leadership skills.
“Leaders can take an intuitive look at their own leadership style while addressing pressing issues impacting today’s media leaders and exploring other important themes that impact the work they do,” states the SPJ website about the institute.
Participants are responsible for their travel costs to and from each location, but lodging and meal costs are provided. Applications are due by May 15, 2019.
Participants in this interactive program learn:
— About their individual leadership style, its strengths, and how to better interact with others
— The role of the leader in managing through change, encouraging diversity and overcoming conflict
— The dynamics of group decision-making and how leaders can help groups make better choices
— New insights on how to engage and motivate peers
— How to effectively manage responsibilities while remaining focused on important goals

Google News Initiative and Training
In addition, the institute will offer Google Training for its participants. A SPJ Google trainer will provide an overview of Google tools or provide in depth training one Google tool. Thanks to a grant from the Google News Initiative, this training is available at the Ted Scripps Leadership Institute in Atlanta.
Facebook Journalism Project Training
In 2018, the Facebook Journalism Project partnered with SPJ to train a network of professionals to teach Facebook tools for journalists at conferences, workshops and newsrooms around the country.
At Ted Scripps Leadership Institute in Atlanta, SPJ trainer Kerwin Speight will share Facebook products and tools — including Live, Groups, Creators app and CrowdTangle — that help journalists leverage Facebook and Instagram for news gathering, storytelling and connecting with their followers.
Speight is an Emmy Award winning journalist with over 15 years experience leading and managing in local news, digital media and community relations. He was executive producer in several newsrooms including WRC-TV in Washington D.C., WRAL-TV in Raleigh, N.C. and WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh, PA. His accolades include two Associated Press Awards, a regional Edward R. Murrow Award, and several state journalism awards.
