Meet Natalie Beckerink, SPJ Region 3’s 2019 summer intern

Hi everyone. My name is Natalie Beckerink and I am the new summer intern for SPJ Region 3 and I am from Huntsville, Alabama, and I am currently a junior at Auburn University, majoring in political science and minoring in journalism.

I have always had somewhat of a passion for journalism, but it really came into fruition when I joined The Auburn Plainsman my freshman year of college. I started as a campus writer with wide eyes and not a lot of confidence, but over the past two years I have really discovered a deeper love for reporting.

“This past year especially I have taken my writing a step further by attempting to take large, national political news, and highlighting how it influences the Auburn community.”

Taking my two areas of interest and combining them was the spark that started this fire of interest. I found myself hunting for stories instead of just waiting to be assigned something. I became more comfortable asking my section editor if a pitch was strong or if he thought I could pull it off. After doing this for about a semester, I decided I was ready to not only continue down this path, but also take more responsibility in regards to leadership roles. I am happy to announce that I have recently earned a position as lifestyle editor for the 2019-2020 school year. I’m so excited for all that I’m about to learn in this position this year.

I discovered SPJ when I attended the SPJ Region 3 conference with a friend in March 2019. I was very intrigued by the theme of the conference, which discussed dealing with the trauma and stress that comes as being a journalist. I had never thought of this concept before, but I really respected the fact that SPJ was bringing it to life and making it more common to talk about. After meeting a few of the board members and talking to them for a while, I was offered the position as the summer intern and accepted it immediately. I’m so honored to have been considered and can’t wait to grow within this organization as well.

Aside from my journalism background, I have a few other interests as well. I love keeping up with politics (my Twitter can reflect that), I enjoy amateur photography and when I have free time, I can be found outside reading a novel.  I was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, so one of my goals is to travel across Europe, and I hope to visit hundreds of coffee shops while I’m there because I’m addicted to coffee.

I’m so glad I could share a little bit about my life with this audience. Thank you so much for reading, I look forward to sharing my work this summer.
