ROUNDUP: North Carolina papers merge; 50-year broadcaster honored

RESTORATION: The owners of North Carolina’s last two family-owned daily publications, The Daily Record and The Wilson Times, have formed  Restoration Newsmedia, a new media management company,  Editor & Publisher reports. The company includes eight newspapers in North Carolina.

CONGRATULATIONS: The National Association of Black Journalists on Aug. 11 named its 2019 Journalist of Distinction. Mel Showers, a broadcast journalist at WKRG TV in Mobile, Alabama, won the award. Showers has spent 50 years on air.


MOMENT OF SILENCE: Huntsville, Alabama station WHNT TV has lost one of its journalists. Broadcaster Ivy Anderson, 22, died Aug. 9. She joined WHNT in January after graduating from the University of Alabama, the station stated.

YOU MAY NOT WANT TO TALK TO THE PRESS: New language in a Doral, Florida ordinance provides a possible censure if one of its council members talks to a member of the media and the council doesn’t like what they said to the press. Brechner Center for Freedom of Information executive director says it is “constitutionally questionable.”
